Abstract

MENDES, Pedro Emanuel. The (re)invention of foreign relations in the turning of the century: the challenge of constructivism. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2012, n.36, pp.105-118. ISSN 1645-9199.

This article is a brief summary on the (re)invention of foreign relations as a scientific discipline in the turning of the century, namely the impact of the challenge brought forth by the emergence of the fourth debate. Our aim is to tone down the unbearable lightness of the theory of foreign relations in Portugal, by endeavouring to contribute to the furtherance of the discussion of the discipline in the context of the significant debate between rationalism and constructivism, namely the comprehensive explanation of the rise of constructivism as the discipline’s chief theory.

Keywords : international relations; great debates; constructivism; theories.
