Abstract

LIMA, Bernardo Pires de. Portugal and the Iraq War. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2013, n.37, pp.43-61. ISSN 1645-9199.

Ten years after the military intervention in Iraq, it is important to consider what has marked the Portuguese political debate in a relevant way, the more significant variables surrounding the government’s decision and the transatlantic framework that defined the spirit and the political discussion around the intervention. The present essay thus aims at answering two questions: why Portugal decided to support the war and the reasons that lie at the basis of the organization of the Lajes Summit.

Keywords : Lajes Summit; Iraq War; transatlantic relations; Portuguese foreign policy.
