Abstract

ESCALONA, Fabien. The Left on the eve of the 2014 European elections. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2014, n.41, pp.45-61. ISSN 1645-9199.

The present paper focuses on the two partisan families that have stemmed from the class cleavage: Social Democracy and the radical Left. Their inner workings and their stance vis-à-vis the European integration are analysed, as well as the evolution of their respective representations in the European Parliament, in order to grasp how each of them envisages the May 2014 European elections. As a class, a pronounced division in the Left is strongly stressed. The disagreements between Social Democracy and radical Left are centered around issues relating to democracy, economy and foreign policy, and evince a conflict over what should be the course of globalization.

Keywords : Social-democracy; radical left; European elections; political party.
