Abstract

FREITAS, Jeane Silva de  and  KUHLMANN, Paulo Roberto Loyolla. Beyond the spontaneity and the power relations: the case of South Sudan. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2014, n.41, pp.135-146. ISSN 1645-9199.

This article aims to analyze the issue of the independence of South Sudan, starting with a theoretical analysis on the imposition of borders in the region. Southern Sudan became an independent country on July 9th 2011, after a nationwide vote in favor of country secession, however, some political and economic problems still remain unresolved since their independence, especially with regard to the defense of Abyei region. Thus, the emphasis is on the evaluation of power relations and the consequences of this dynamic for the Sudanese people, with the framework of the postmodernist theories.

Keywords : South Sudan; secession; power relations; borders.
