Abstract

This article describes the contribution of the Polish Catholic church for the democratic process in Poland. The article proposes that the church had a crucial role in the formulation of the opposition networks that led to the formation of the Solidarity Trade Union in 1980 and that its social and political capital was essential to lead the pacted transition resulting in the crumbling of communism in Central and Eastern Europe in 1989 and in European reunification. This article analyzes the work of the church during the different phases of this process, from the imposition of communist to the semi-free elections of 1989.
