Resumen

FONSECA, Ana Mónica. The socialist parties and the European democratic transitions: the Portuguese transition as a lesson to the 1989 European Revolution. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2014, n.43, pp.51-63. ISSN 1645-9199.

In this article we analyze the pro-democratizing strategy of the Socialist International, an organization of the Western European socialist and social democrats, during the Portuguese transition to democracy and the impact this has had on subsequent action of SI in scenarios of political transition. We pay special attention to the role of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), which, by the material resources available to it and its international political influence, occupied a leading position in the international social democratic movement - a role that was strengthened with the election of Willy Brandt as President of IS in 1976.

Palabras clave : Socialist International; Non-governmental actors; Willy Brandt; Mário Soares.
