Abstract

LEAL, Catarina Mendes. Risks and opportunities for the North Africa and West Africa Basin countries in supplying Portugal. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2015, n.46, pp.45-60. ISSN 1645-9199.

In the XXIst century, energy security is a challenge of great importance given the imbalance in the global distribution of oil and natural gas reserves, the increasing supply constraints of fossil fuels worldwide and due to the turbulence that features some of the producing regions. Portugal is a country with limited indigenous energy resources in particular those which provide the majority of energy needs. Portugal depends on external supply, especially from the countries of North Africa and from West Africa Basin. Currently, these two regions are confronted with an increasing asymmetry and long-term security risks that are becoming worst with the increa sing interconnection between them.

Keywords : Energy security; North Africa; West Africa basin; strategies.
