Abstract

CASTANO, David. Portugal and the UN: the first approach. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2015, n.47, pp.9-38. ISSN 1645-9199.

In this article we describe the first application for admission of Portugal to the UN. This attempt of accession must therefore be read as another example of the adaptation of the regime to the new post-war international system. Strategy that began in 1943, even before the war ended, with the embargo on the sale of tungsten and the ceding of bases in the Azores to the Anglo-Americans, went through accession on the oeec and an agreement for the exploration and exploitation of Portuguese uranium, and culminated with the adhesion of Portugal to nato in 1949.

Keywords : Post-war; Portugal; United Nations Organization; Cold War.
