Resumen

BRANCO, Carlos Martins. The Portuguese participation in UN peace missions. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2015, n.47, pp.101-126. ISSN 1645-9199.

This article aims at describing and analysing what has been the Portuguese participation - Armed and Constabulary Forces - in peace missions, in the last 23 years. The analysis highlights three fundamental features: the number of theatres of operations where national forces operated has increased, as well as the distance among them. National forces began operating outside the traditional regions of national interest; in a significant number of occasions, national participation was done through individual contributions, small and with short duration (one/two years); The military and constabulary forces own unquestionable subject matter expertise to work in the framework of United Nations peacebuilding operations.

Palabras clave : Peace Missions; UN; Armed Forces; Constabulary Forces.
