Abstract

CUNHA, Alice. Portugal, Spain and Europe. Between the parallelism of the accession negotiations and the capitalization of the EEC third enlargement. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2015, n.48, pp.25-41. ISSN 1645-9199.

Focusing on the Portuguese application to join the European Economic Community, this article seeks to demonstrate that the simultaneity of the accession negotiations of Portugal and Spain delayed the Portuguese accession. It also analyses the fact that, although member states were favorable in principle to further enlargement, they dealt with the process at their own pace and according to their own particular requirements, and in what way did the interests of the member states conditioned the accession process.

Keywords : Iberian enlargement; European Economic Community; Portugal; Spain.
