Abstract

FERNANDES, António Horta. The concept of security: an obstacle to peace. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2015, n.48, pp.139-164. ISSN 1645-9199.

The present article aims to show how the concept of security, so much in fashion among the academic world but also in political speeches and legal indictments, with the purpose of finding a solid and lasting peace in the external ambit, preventingfuture conflicts, and a social harmony at least sufficient in the internal ambit, does not manage to achieve its goal. On the contrary, security, in its eagerness of assurance toward the other, inherent to an idea of private freedom, rather promotes the exasperation of conflicts and prevents the longing for a good life in the internal space. The omnipresence of the culture of security, better said, the security obsession, reveals a destructive biopower.

Keywords : Security; immunity; sovereign; strategy.
