Abstract

ANDRE, José Gomes. 2016, "the long walk": From primary elections to Obama's succession. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2016, n.51, pp.27-41. ISSN 1645-9199.

This article deals with the electoral year of 2016 in the USA, especially the presidential election. We start by describing the fundamental characteristics of the “Primary elections”, in a historical and methodological perspective, which is followed by a commentary of this year results (both in the Republican and Democratic Parties). The next section evaluates prospectively the chances of the candidates in the upcoming elections in November (to the White House and Congress). In the final part of the paper, we analyze the main topics of the presidential campaign and the proposals of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in five areas: economy, foreign policy, justice, immigration and healthcare.
