Abstract

BOTELHO, Teresa. The announced implosion of the Republican party: American populism in times of uncertainty. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2016, n.51, pp.43-56. ISSN 1645-9199.

The 2016 presidential campaign had been analyses as a moment of almost incomprehensible paradox, as an exception in the American political ecosystem, threatening the history and internal coherence of the Republican Party, the relationship between its leadership and supporters, and its very future. This article problematizes this view, discussing the long roots of the American conservative populism, inside and outside the traditional party structures and analyzing moments of similar turbulence in the relationship between candidates not embraced by the party leadership (the two first presidential campaigns of Ronald Reagan), sustaining the view that an analysis of Donald Trump's assault on the Republican Party requires the consideration of elements of continuity and exceptionality.

Keywords : Donald Trump; Republican Party; Conservative Populism; Nativism; Political Realignment.
