Abstract

SA, Tiago Moreira de. United States and the Azores: the Lajes Base and the American retranchment. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2016, n.51, pp.57-74. ISSN 1645-9199.

With this article we intend to better understand some of the more specific elements of the new American policy of retrenchment and Asian rebalancing while looking closer into one side of its consequences - the Atlantic side and, even more specifically, that of the Lajes Base, in the Azores. For that, the article will be developed through three levels: the macro-level is the one concerning the changes in the international structure of distribution of power and the American strategic response through its simultaneous retrenchment and rebalancing to Asia policies; the second level, which we may call regional or European level, concerns what American official vocabulary has called European Infrastructure Consolidation, that is, the requalification of their military bases system in Europe; finally, the micro-level, the one of the Lajes Base in the previously referred context.

Keywords : Retrenchment; rebalancing; Transatlantic relations; Azores.
