Abstract

DIAS, António. On Democratic "deconsolidation" and backlash. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2016, n.52, pp.27-41. ISSN 1645-9199.

After decades of democratic optimism, pessimism seems to be installed in the academia concerning the future of democracy around the world. A combination of significant institutional developments in recent democracies and the emergence of anti‑systemic populisms in older ones brought many questions on the stability of contemporaneous democratic regimes. Nevertheless, these efforts have been faulty due to the fragmentation of their analysis - frequently based on case studies - and the theoretical framework on which they relied. This article tries to reevaluate this literature focusing its analysis in the common themes that this decon‑solidation/backlash literature shares with the literature on the third wave of democratization.

Keywords : Democratization; democratic consolidation; third wave of democratization; democratic backlash.
