Abstract

RAIMUNDO, António. Portugal and Brexit: A persevering Europeanism, but under pressure. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2017, n.56, pp.113-127. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2017.56a07.

The prospect of a Brexit is an unprecedented development for European integration, which is likely to have deep implications at European and global level. Portugal will obviously not be spared from those possible effects, taking into account the EU's central importance for the country, as well as the relevant Luso-British ties. The article offers a detailed analysis of Portuguese reactions to the initial stages of the United Kingdom's exit from the EU, concluding that Portugal's stance in general was cautious and conciliatory. Such stance is demonstrative of an enduring Europeanism, yet more prudent and balanced by the Atlanticist traits that are also constitutive of Portugal's identity and international relations

Keywords : Portugal; United Kingdom; European Union; Brexit.
