Abstract

PIEDADE, João. Maritime security and security studies: a literature review. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2018, n.57, pp.11-24. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2018.57a02.

The concept of maritime security is not defined and has been characterized as embracing and diffuse. In some cases, the understanding of this concept was described as actor and context specific. This literature review aims to correlate the security concepts framed by the international relations debates and the evolution of the concept of maritime security. Throughout a critical and in depth evaluation of previous research, security studies theories will be discussed and studied to find consistent and contrasting views. The findings revealed that there is a correlation of the “trends” in international relations theory’s and the accepted maritime security concepts.

Keywords : Maritime security; security studies; literature review; international relations.
