Abstract

FERNANDES, Moisés Silva. An asymmetrical relationship: The minutes of the talks on the Macao issue were the crucial condition for Mainland China to normalize relations with Portugal in 1979. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2018, n.60, pp.141-157. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2018.60a08.

On 8 February 1979 two agreements were signed with the People’s Republic of China at the Portuguese Embassy in Paris, between the ambassadors of Portugal and China. The first was the joint communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Portugal which was common among nation-States. The second was on the draft of the talks on the question of Macao, which in turn was a consequence of the last twenty-nine years of informal relations that Macao had with the People’s Republic of China, always marked by an asymmetrical relationship.

Keywords : asymmetry; Mainland China; Portugal; Macao; Hong Kong; Taiwan.
