Abstract

REIS, Célia. The Eusébio da Fonseca's mission to London (1912-1913) and the economies of Indie and Macao. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2019, n.61, pp.11-24. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2019.61a02.

In November 1912, Domingos Eusébio da Fonseca, Director-general of Colonial Finances, left for London. He was commissioned by the Portuguese Govern to get an agreement concerning the distillation of alcoholic beverages in India. In London, he tried to get also another agreement about the opium trade, for Macao and Hong Kong. Both cases were relevant to the colonial economies, dependent on the adjacent spaces, mainly of British Colonies. However, the positions were not always the same, changing in accord with the needs. Eusébio da Fonseca was a controversial person and a parliamentary inquiry was being conducted about him. The length of his stay in London arose antagonism, particularly of the opposite party, to his interests and the results of his mission.

Keywords : colonies; abkari; opium; India; Macau.
