Abstract

MAKARYCHEV, Andrey  and  PLOOM, Illimar. The ethnopolitics of the refugee crisis: an inquiry into Estonian debates. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2019, n.62, pp.39-56. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2019.62a04.

This article compares the Estonian mainstream and the Russophone discourses on immigration as a global problem, and asks a question of whether the refugee crisis, as debated in political narratives and translated through the media, has an impact on political identities of the dominant majority and the Russian-speaking minority in Estonia. We seek to find out how diverse are Estonian-language and Russian-language discourses on the whole plethora of immigration-related issues, how can we compare these discourses, and where are the major similarities and points of divergence.

Keywords : refugee crisis; Estonia; Russia; Russophone community.
