Abstract

IANCU, Alexandra. The "illiberal turn" versus the rule of law mechanism: reflections on recent political evolutions in Poland and Romania. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2019, n.62, pp.57-73. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2019.62a05.

The new wave of nationalisms in the ECE has contributed to escalating the conflict between governmental majorities and the EU institutions. For the first time after 1989, some of the ECE leaders rebuffed the allegations of the EU Commission and the European Parliament and refused compliance by articulating an ideologically-inspired repository of ‘resistance’ discourses. The objections which have been raised regard not only the validity of the EU positions on the quality of democracy but also the alleged definition of the European values. By focusing on the conflictive narratives on the rule of law in Poland and Romania, the paper will argue that although there are significant differences between the forms of ‘new nationalism’ in Poland and Romania, the two current governments tend to converge on the European arena by adopting sovereigntist claims and by questioning the mainstream interpretations of the EU fundamental values.

Keywords : Poland; Romania; rule of law; illiberal democracy.
