Abstract

QUEIROGA, Viriato. The 2019 European elections in Cyprus: between the consolidation of the old protagonists and the threat of a new political force. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2019, n.64, pp.101-115. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2019.64a07.

In this article, the results of the 2019 European Elections in Cyprus are analysed from a longitudinal perspective according to the scientific literature and the national political context. Although the results of the 2019 Elections show that the four main parties kept the same number of mandates they had received in the 2014 elections, they also suggest a change in the political context. The distance between the conservative incumbent DISY and the communist AKEL (the main opposition party) decreased, some smaller parties had more votes and the electoral climbing of the far-right party, ELAM, continued.

Keywords : 2019 European elections; Cyprus; Southern Europe; political parties.
