Abstract

SARAIVA, Miriam Gomes  and  SILVA, Álvaro Vicente Costa. Ideology and pragmatism in Jair Bolsonaro's foreign policy. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2019, n.64, pp.117-137. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2019.64a08.

The arrival of Jair Bolsonaro in the Brazilian presidency has brought many changes in Brazilian foreign policy. Many consolidated patterns of the country's international behaviour were put at risk, and then replaced by statements and/or actions than caused not only frictions with international partners but also with domestic actors. The article discusses the contrast between a basically ideological dimension of Bolsonaro's government foreign policy and reactions with a pragmatic nature that seek to defend specific interests of domestic actors. With this aim, this paper presents a dichotomy between declarations of actors, representatives of the ideological wing of the government and statements of actors that defend pragmatic measures. Its methodology is based on research with newspaper articles and official documents.

Keywords : Brazilian Foreign policy; ideology; pragmatism; Bolsonaro Government.
