Abstract

PEREIRA, Rui. China and Africa: a strategic cooperation partnership or a (progressive) dependency relationship? The problematic of the African debt. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2020, n.65, pp.15-32. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2020.65a02.

This article seeks to address the recent evolution and the current reality of the economic and trade relationship between China and Africa, focusing on the growing debt problem of African countries towards China, further to the policy of loans directed to the financing of development projects, in particular in the infrastructure sector. In this context, the extent to which fears about the existence of a deliberate Chinese strategy around the so-called “debt-trap diplomacy” with respect to Africa are credible, will be discussed.

Keywords : China; Africa; cooperation; debt.
