Abstract

COELHO, Paulo Neves. The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2020, n.66, pp.27-41. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2020.65a03.

The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea constitutes the legal framework of reference for the international contemporary law of the sea. Although there are still some States that have not ratified it, many of the rules contained therein have been recognized as part of the international customary law, thus gaining an even broader scope. This article goes through the history of the law of the sea to the present day, covering in a very brief way the regime of maritime zones established in that convention.

Keywords : International Law; Law of the Sea; 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea; customary international law.
