Based on the relevance of the scientific knowledge for ocean affairs this study analyses the European approach through the EU Integrated Maritime Policy, especially in the Atlantic Ocean basin. In the same way the un Decade of Ocean Science 2021-2030 initiative, in the scope of the goal 14 “Life below water” of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was evaluated. On the Atlantic scientific framework, the challenges to Portugal in this matter were examined. Conclude this analysis a reference to some possible scenarios for the development of the scientific knowledge of the Ocean in the next decade.
