Abstract
REIS, Bruno Cardoso. Is NATO obsolete or can it be adapted to fit future decades?. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2020, n.67, pp.105-121. Epub Dec 31, 2020. ISSN 1645-9199. https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2020.67a08.
NATO has reached the mandatory retirement age. Seven decades are a lot in a person’s life, but they are also a lot for a military alliance. There are no examples in the history of multilateral alliances, those involving a large number of countries, of one that has lasted so long. Is the collapse of NATO therefore inevitable? If NATO is really at risk, for Portugal the consequences would be great and very disturbing of the traditional pillars of its integration in the international system and one of the pillars of its defense since the end of the Second World War. We argue in this text that the end of NATO is not inevitable (or desirable), and we posite specific areas in which it can change to improve its cohesion and effectiveness.
