Abstract

FREIRE, Maria Raquel. China-Russia relationship under a strategic containment’s framework. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2021, n.71, pp.51-66.  Epub Sep 30, 2021. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2021.71a04.

This article analyses Russian foreign policy in its Asian dimension, placing Russia’s relations with China in the broader framework of Russia’s foreign policy “Asia Pivot” strategy. The study concludes with a cautious reading of this relationship, understanding that underlying a greater proximity and intensified collaboration, there is a relationship of double strategic containment, both in relation to the US and the West, and between these two giants. For Russia, the relevance of China in political and economic terms is evident and clearly assumed, but the fear of imbalances resulting from substantive differences between the two, has held back actions, while motivating other in a logic of much-needed refocusing and rebalancing for Moscow.

Keywords : Russia; foreign policy; Asia pivot; China.
