Abstract

BERNARDINO, Luís Manuel Brás. NATO’s southern flank paradigm and the geostrategic relevance to Portugal. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2021, n.72, pp.43-62.  Epub Dec 31, 2021. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2021.72a03.

At a time when NATO is preparing to discuss and approve at the Madrid Summit (2022) the new Strategic Concept, and in a very complex and unpredictable global geopolitical and geostrategic framework, where cooperative and collective security remains the instrument that makes the Alliance work, it seems relevant to reflect on the role of the organization in the world and especially on its southern flank. This reflection, focused essentially on the strategic-operational aspect, aims to point out crucial elements for the new Strategic Concept of the Alliance and the impact for Portugal.

Keywords : NATO; collective security; global defense; NATO Strategic Concept.
