Abstract

GIL, Ana Rita. International protection revisited: The European Union solutions for the protection of displaced people from the Ukraine war in a context of ‘multiple refugee crises’. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2022, n.75, pp.45-62.  Epub Sep 30, 2022. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2022.75a04.

In this article the solutions found by the European Union to respond to an ‘unprecedented refugee crisis’ will be studied. Such crisis corresponds to the recent mass movement of displaced persons from the Ukraine war, following the Russian invasion of February 2022. The European Union’s response was unprecedented, having resorted, for the first time in history, to a European instrument that had been adopted more than twenty years ago: the Temporary Protection Directive. However, it is important to critically analyse this solution, and question why it was not adopted in previous cases of massive influx of people to the European Union.

Keywords : refugees; displaced persons; international protection; Ukrainian War.
