Abstract

BENTO, Vítor. The relevance of economy for Portugal’s strategic autonomy. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2023, n.77, pp.111-129.  Epub Mar 31, 2023. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2023.77a11.

The economy, especially since the middle of the last century, has proved to be an important strategic theatre where countries build power and influence in international relations. Through the development of their respective economies, national states acquire or lose relevance at the international level, broaden or narrow their strategic autonomy, gaining ascendancy or creating vulnerabilities. Besides the economic power acquired allows them to extend power to other areas, such as, for example, the military area (where the Chinese case is paradigmatic).

Keywords : economy; economic power; strategic autonomy; Portugal.
