Abstract

DIAS, Vanda Amaro. The Portuguese contribution in the 20 years of international military interventions in Afghanistan (2001-2021). Relações Internacionais [online]. 2023, n.78, pp.5-16.  Epub June 30, 2023. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2023.78a01.

This paper analyzes the Portuguese involvement in international efforts to manage the situation in Afghanistan, in the post-9/11 2001, via the deployment of National Detached Forces. The goal is to highlight how this experience contributed to the affirmation and recognition of Portugal as a credible, solidary and conciliatory partner, as well as an important ally in the process of promoting peace and providing international security. The article analyses the Portuguese participation in the International Security Assistance Force, between 2001 and 2014, and in the Resolute Support Mission, between 2015 and 2021, and reflects on the withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan, with particular focus on the case of Portugal.

Keywords : Afghanistan; international missions; National Detached Forces; Portugal.
