PEREZ, Rafael García  e  CAVICCHIOLI, Manuel Iglesias. Spain in the Lajes Summit. The end of the consensus in foreign policy. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2023, n.78, pp.17-31.  Epub 30-Jun-2023. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2023.78a02.

The Azores Summit marks a turning point of enormous significance in Spain’s foreign policy. Criticized by the entire political opposition as the culmination of José María Aznar’s warlike position and claimed by him as the zenith of his foreign policy, the Azores Summit is the symbol of an extremely tumultuous period in Spanish politics. This article examines the importance of this summit as the turning point of a profound change in the foreign policy model implemented until then. It will also pay attention to the meaning of the Azores Summit on its 20th anniversary and how it has largely influenced Spain’s foreign policy in the two decades since.

Palavras-chave : María Aznar; Azores Summit; Spanish foreign policy; Atlanticism.
