Abstract

MARGATO, Gonçalo. ‘Quis saber quem sou’ - dominant discursive tendencies in the narrative of identity of the Portuguese democracy. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2023, n.80, pp.39-53.  Epub Mar 31, 2024. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2023.80a03.

After 48 years, how can we describe the relationship between Portuguese democracy and the national identity metanarrative? This essay aims to understand which discursive tendencies dominate the identity narrative reproduced by the Portuguese democratic elites, based on an analysis of discourses and on a vast bibliographic revision. As so, we identify three major expedients used to reflect about the Portuguese national identity during democracy: reconstruction, occlusion, and insertion.

Keywords : construction of identities; national identity; Portuguese democracy; socio-political elites.
