MACHADO, Virgílio Miguel. The sea: Portuguese geopolitical identity and strategic depth in international relations. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2023, n.80, pp.55-69.  Epub Dec 31, 2023. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2023.80a04.

Portugal, in its history, had a special relationship with the sea, as an expression of geopolitical unity and identity. In this article, variables of this identity and international relations built within medieval Europe from the mid-12th century to the end of the 14th century are explored and allow comparisons to be made with actuality, projecting the development of modern international relations, according to principles of sustainability considered to have strategic depth.

Keywords : geopolitics; identity; sea.
