Abstract

FERNANDES, José Pedro Teixeira. A turbulent energy transition: the intersection of two geopolitics. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2023, n.80, pp.71-85.  Epub Dec 31, 2023. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2023.80a05.

Under the guidance of the 2015 Paris Agreement the shift from a human way of life based on intensive use of fossil energies, to economies that will use renewable energies with neutral environmental impacts should take place. Beyond the need to preserve the planet, this is a highly complex transformation with potentially huge repercussions on international political economy, i.e., wealth and power. Thus, the main objective of this article is to explore the links between the current energy transition and geopolitics. Possible consequences at the global level will be considered, including a brief look at the specific case of the European Union.

Keywords : transition; energy security; geopolitics; European Union.
