ESTEVES, Dulce et al. Assessment of physical education teachers’ knowledge to react on emergency situations. Motri. [online]. 2015, vol.11, n.1, pp.39-52. ISSN 1646-107X.  https://doi.org/10.6063/motricidade.3125.

Physical Education (PE Teachers’ knowledge on 1st aid embraces their action in emergency situations, so it is important to evaluate it. We investigated 284 PE teachers (57.7% Male, 41.9% Female, 37.6 ± 7.1 years) using a questionnaire specially designed to evaluate (1) theoretical knowledge (KT) about how to act in emergency situations, (2) operational knowledge (KO) for action in the face of emergency and (3) how age, gender, education, perception of individual knowledge and information sources of influence KT and KO. 19% of interviewed teachers present good level of KT and 49.5% good level of KO. Age and education influence knowledge: younger teachers show best KT and KO Masters present better KT but an equal level of KO. Gender does not influence neither KT nor KO. Doctors / nurses and professional education are the best information sources to improve KO. 50.5% of teachers have a bad or average KO, which may impair their action face the accident. The introduction of modules in 1st aid training, especially if they are taught by doctors / nurses, seems to be an efficient strategy to improve the knowledge of action on emergency.
