Abstract

BANDEIRA, Paulo Felipe Ribeiro et al. Motor Performance, Socioeconomic status, body mass index and gender in children: a comparative and associative study. Motri. [online]. 2016, vol.12, suppl.1, pp.54-61. ISSN 1646-107X.

The aims of the study were: To compare motor performance of boys and girls from different socioeconomic status and to verify the associations among motor performance, socioeconomic status, sex, and body mass index. Participated in the study children from high (N=45) and low (N=43) socioeconomic status aged between 7-10 years (M = 8.7, SD = 1.0). Children from high socioeconomic status demonstrated higher motor performance; while differences between sex were not observed. Girls from low socioeconomic status demonstrated better object control performance as compared to boys; while a similar performance was observed for locomotion. A linear regression analysis indicated that the prediction model with socioeconomic status and body mass index was significant [r2 = 0.607 F(3,84) = 45.8 p <0.001]. Socioeconomic status was the motor performance’ strongest predictor. Association studies are needed to better explain the motor performance in different contexts.
