Swimming in open water has gained, in recent years, a relevant number of fans. Due to this growing search, the present study had the objective of describing the profile of swimming participants in open water of Fortaleza-Ceará city. The study included 50 swimmers in open water for at least three months of practice, aged between 21 and 66 years. We used a closed questionnaire, composed of 30 questions containing dichotomous, multiple choice and multiple template questions, and carried out using the Google Docs® tool. The approach of the participants took place in the border of Fortaleza and, once accepted the invitation, the link of the questionnaire was sent by e-mail. There was a high prevalence of post-graduates, mainly among women (73.3%). The pleasure of swimming in nature was a goal well reported by women (60%), while men were divided between the pleasure of swimming in nature (28.6%), competition (20%) and physical conditioning (20%). It is concluded that the profile of open water swimmers in the city of Fortaleza is characterized by people of higher income and education, whose objectives are related to physical conditioning and to enjoy sports with nature.
