Abstract

MOREIRA, Fernando  and  FONSECA, Daniela. Contributions to the history of sport in Portugal. Motri. [online]. 2022, vol.18, n.4, pp.530-534.  Epub Dec 31, 2022. ISSN 1646-107X.  https://doi.org/10.6063/motricidade.26105.

At the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, sport in Portugal, in its most diverse forms, experienced a remarkable increase. The proposed reflection, preceded by a short passage through the semantics of the word sport in the Portuguese language in different historical periods and a filiation on the Socratic questions about the importance of physical education/sport for human welfare, signals based on news of the magazine Ilustração Portuguesa and with particular focus on the years between 1909-1912, the positive growth of sports practice in Portugal, leisure and competition, in those years preceding the first participation of the country in the Olympics of the modern era, in Stockholm.

Keywords : sport; history; leisure; competition; Ilustração Portuguesa.
