Resumen

FERNANDES, Leonor et al. Prótese ARPE® no tratamento da rizartrose. Rev. Port. Ortop. Traum. [online]. 2012, vol.20, n.1, pp.37-43. ISSN 1646-2122.

Goal: Thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthrosis is a clinical entity for which several surgical treatments have been described. The authors present a retrospective study of the functional results obtained in the treatment of patients with this disease by the replacement of the joint with a total non cemented prosthesis (ARPE®). Matherial and methods: Patients submitted to this procedure, between 2002 and 2008, were reviewed. These were 14 patients (13 women:1 man), comprising a total of 16 hands. The average age was 61 years (52-74). Indications for surgery were failed conservative treatment and advanced disease (Eaton-Littler stage II or III). The average follow-up was 58 months (18-90). Results: Most patients (86%) considered the result of the surgery to be “Excellent” or “Good”. There were three revision surgeries, two of which resulted in prosthesis removal. The overall prosthesis survival was 88% and the average Quick-DASH score was 6,02 (0-36,4). Conclusions: We conclude that total joint arthroplasty with an ARPE® prosthesis is an efficient method of treatment for low demand patients with a Eaton-Littler stage II or III thumb osteoarthrosis. More cases and a longer follow up are required to reach further conclusions.
