SANTOS, Francisco; DEUASSE, Barnabé; SCHMAUCH, Matthias y ASSIS, António. Procedimento de Huntington no tratamento de grande defeito ósseo em osteomielite da tíbia. Rev. Port. Ortop. Traum. [online]. 2014, vol.22, n.1, pp.152-158. ISSN 1646-2122.
Objective: Substantial tibial defects are major therapeutic challenges. Decription: We present a case of a 9 years old girl with sickle cell disease, which developed a tibial chronic osteomyelitis and suffered a pathologic fracture of the tibial shaft. She underwent surgical treatment resulting in an extensive bone defect. After infection remission she was readmitted for reconstructive surgery by the Huntington procedure. The final outcome was a functional and infection free limb. Comments: This method consists on a tibialisation of the fibula respecting its blood supply with no need for microsurgery techniques or expensive material. We consider the Huntington procedure very useful in the management of such complex cases particularly in a setting where there are limited resources.
