Abstract

COSTA, Jorge et al. Tratamento das metástases vertebrais. Rev. Port. Ortop. Traum. [online]. 2014, vol.22, n.4, pp.350-359. ISSN 1646-2122.

The occurrence of vertebral metastasis is common in patients with cancer, their occurrence is being a challenge to the spinal surgeon. The approach of these lesions should be multidisciplinary, it doesn´t exist yet universally accepted guidelines. However there is now a refinement of treatment protocols for patients with spinal metastasis which has led to a gradual improvement in prognosis, reduction of pain complaints and an increase in median survival of the patient. The treatment may be conservative through steroid therapy, palliative radiotherapy or surgical or otherwise and may be based on indices such as Tokuhashi, Tomita Capuccio or treatment. The aim of this review article is to optimize the approach and treatment planning in metastatic vertebral lesions.

Keywords : Spine; metastases; guidelines for treatment; prognosis preoperatively; surgery; multidisciplinary approach.
