Resumen

CATARINO, Isabel et al. Schwanoma da mão: A propósito de um caso clínico. Rev. Port. Ortop. Traum. [online]. 2018, vol.26, n.3, pp.253-259. ISSN 1646-2122.

The soft tissue tumours of the hand are seen on a regular basis by the hand surgeons, representing 15% of all soft tissue tumours. Although the vast majority of the lesions are benign, it is important to consider chances of malignancy if existing signs and/or symptoms1. The most common benign soft tissue tumours of the hand are lipoma, fibroma, neurofribroma, ganglion, giant cell tumours and xanthoma2,3. Schwannomas are benign nerve sheath tumours composed of Schwann cells. The chances of becoming malign are low1,2, and, despite being the most frequent peripheral nerves tumour4, they only represent 0,8-2% of all hand tumours2,5. The authors describe an atypical study case of a patient with a swelling on the palmar surface of the hand caused by the co-existence of two soft tissue tumours: one lipoma and one giant schwannoma of the palmar digital branches of the median nerve whose diagnosis was only achieved through surgery.
