COELHO, Ana M.; MARQUES, Tiago P.; ALONSO, Raul  e  PIRES, Luís. Avaliação retrospectiva de fracturas da clavícula tratadas com osteossíntese rígida: Resultados e complicações. Rev. Port. Ortop. Traum. [online]. 2019, vol.27, n.1, pp.5-12. ISSN 1646-2122.

Introduction Traditionally, clavicle fractures are treated conservatively. However, recent evidence shows less satisfactory functional results with conservative treatment. We present our results and complications with surgical treatment of displaced clavicle fractures in a group of 36 patients. Materials and Methods We evaluated retrospectively, patients with displaced clavicle fractures treated surgically with open reduction and osteosynthesis between 2012-2015. Fractures were classified according to AO classification and we selected young patients with high functional needs. Follow-up was performed with clinical and functional evaluation. Data regarding mobility, return to work and sports as well as evaluation with Quick Disabilities of Arm Shoulder and Hand (Quick-DASH) were collected. Patients were evaluated with radiographs until evidence of fracture healing and then after 6-12 month for discussing hardware removal. Results We present 36 patients with a mean follow-up of 26 month, mean age of 35,16 years old. All patients recovered a full mobility arch without limitation in their activities. Functional score QuickDash averaged 1,4. Except for one case of nonunion, all fractures healed in an average of 3,3 months (2-6). We report one case of a superficial infection of the surgical wound, which resolved after debridement and wound closure. Discussion Despite high fracture healing rates reported with conservative treatment, clinical and functional results are frequently suboptimal. Surgical treatment has shown good results, allowing for early mobilization and return to previous daily and sport activities, with a low incidence of complications.
