Abstract

DUARTE, Pedro et al. Ludwig’s Angina, a clinical case report. Rev Port Estomatol Med Dent Cir Maxilofac [online]. 2020, vol.61, n.1, pp.29-32.  Epub Mar 30, 2020. ISSN 1646-2890.  https://doi.org/10.24873/j.rpemd.2020.07.698.

Ludwig’s angina is a severe cellulitis involving the submandibular space, with acute onset and rapidly progressive evolution. We describe the case of a 33-year-old man with a progressive submandibular swelling associated with an airway obstruction that required mechanical ventilation. Radiologically, the patient presented with an extensive phlegmonous process of the soft tissues of the neck, originating from homolateral dental caries. Abscess drainage and antibiotic therapy were performed, without evidence of improvement. Surgical intervention was required, resulting in slow but favorable evolution. This case shows that successful treatment depends on early diagnosis and treatment.
