Abstract

RIBEIRO, Gabriela Kelly da Silva, Marcela Ferreira Abrahão et al. Paracoccidioidomycosis: a clinical-epidemiological review of cases with oral lesions in 24 years. Rev Port Estomatol Med Dent Cir Maxilofac [online]. 2020, vol.61, n.3, pp.122-127.  Epub Sep 30, 2020. ISSN 1646-2890.  https://doi.org/10.24873/j.rpemd.2020.11.717.

Objectives:

Retrospective analysis of the epidemiological and clinical profiles of the treatment and prognosis of patients diagnosed with oral lesions of paracoccidioidomycosis.

Methods:

Biopsy records, from 1994 to 2018, from patients diagnosed with paracoccidioidomycosis were reviewed in the laboratory of Bucomaxillofacial Pathology of the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais. Demographic and clinical data were obtained from the biopsy records. The patients with previous oral paracoccidioidomycosis diagnoses were contacted by telephone or e-mail and invited to return for oral mucosa investigation. The study was approved by the research ethics committee.

Results:

A total of 17,358 patients were diagnosed with oral lesions in the last 24 years in the service of Bucomaxillofacial Pathology. Of these, 59 cases (0.3%) were diagnosed with paracoccidioidomycosis.

The majority of the patients were men (93.0%), with a mean of 49.9 years old, white (72.9%), and rural workers (25.4%). The lesions were described mainly as ulcers and located on the buccal mucosa, lip, and tongue. Of the patients contacted, only eight (13.3%) returned for reassessment at the clinic. All of them were cured and did not report relapses.

Conclusions:

Paracoccidioidomycosis is a fungal lesion of low incidence in the oral cavity. Associated oral lesions occur predominantly in men and can affect a wide age range. Response rates for the clinical reevaluation of these patients were low.
