SOUSA, Joana A. B. de et al. Impact of halitosis on quality of life: Analysis before and after oral rehabilitation. Rev Port Estomatol Med Dent Cir Maxilofac [online]. 2021, vol.62, n.2, pp.94-99.  Epub 30-Jun-2021. ISSN 1646-2890.  https://doi.org/10.24873/j.rpemd.2021.06.833.

Objectives:

To analyze the correlation between the level of halitosis and oral health-related quality of life and investigate changes in the level of halitosis after oral rehabilitation.

Methods:

An observational study was conducted with a sample of 32 patients. Socio-demographic data and oral hygiene habits were recorded, a periodontal examination was performed, the OHIP-14 questionnaire was applied, and the organoleptic test was performed to assess the level of halitosis. The statistical analysis included the chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, and the t-test. The level of significance was set at 5%.

Results:

The group with halitosis presented a higher frequency of unsatisfactory oral hygiene of the dental biofilm, low adherence to flossing, and presence of lingual biofilm (p<0.001). All patients with halitosis had periodontitis (p=0.026). A greater impact of oral health on quality of life was detected in the Halitosis Group (p =0.003). The comparative analysis before and after oral rehabilitation showed a significant reduction in halitosis levels (p=0.002).

Conclusions:

Oral health’s negative impact on quality of life is greater in individuals with halitosis. The adoption of oral hygiene care and proper planning of dental treatment can help control halitosis and contribute to improving quality of life.
