Abstract

Objectives:

Structural or anatomical differences in the upper airways may arise after Le Fort I osteotomy, namely in the maxillary sinus. The present study aimed to compare the maxillary sinus volume before and after a Le Fort I advancement osteotomy.

Methods:

In this retrospective study, 19 orthodontic patients who underwent orthognathic surgery with Le Fort I advancement osteotomy were included. Preoperative (T0) and postoperative (T1) cone-beam computed tomographies were evaluated with the ITK-SNAP software to access the maxillary sinus volume. The paired-samples t test was used to assess the effect of Le Fort I advancement osteotomy on the maxillary sinus volume. A significance level of p<0.05 was adopted.

Results:

No statistically significant differences were found in the maxillary sinus volume after orthognathic surgery (p=0.494). However, there was an increase in the postoperative volume of the right maxillary sinus in males (p = 0.037). Contrarily, no statistically significant diferences were found in females, neither on the right (p=0.150) or left (p=0.370) maxillary sinus.

Conclusions:

No statistically significant differences were found in the maxillary sinus volume after Le Fort I advancement osteotomy. Regarding sex, males had a larger right maxillary sinus volume than females in the postoperative period.
