Abstract

PEIXOTO, Cláudia Isabel Leite da Silva  and  RAMALHO, Carla. The use of metformin during pregnancy. Acta Obstet Ginecol Port [online]. 2016, vol.10, n.1, pp.43-49. ISSN 1646-5830.

Metformin is an effective oral anti-diabetic that has been used in pregnancy during the last decades. However, metformin crosses the placenta, so its use remains controversial. Scientific evidence suggests that the use of metformin in pregnancy is safe. In the treatment of gestational diabetes has efficacy comparable to insulin, and in polycystic ovary syndrome improves pregnancy success rate, prevents ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and might reduce some pregnancy complications. Although there is no evidence of modifications in the development of children exposed to metformin, more studies are needed to evaluate the long-term effects.

Keywords : Metformin; Pregnancy; Gestational Diabetes; Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.
